The University of Reading excavation and Field School return to Paddock Field on Tuesday 6th August, and will run for four weeks ending on 31 August. We’ll be working Tuesdays to Saturdays, 9-5. Friends of Cookham Abbey will be putting on guided tours starting on Thurs 8th August, led by archaeologists and students. Numbers will be limited, so that tours will be the right size for a good visit.
The site will be closed on Sundays and Mondays.
NB no tours on the dig final Saturday – we’ll be too busy finishing up and closing the trenches!
We are asking for a donation of £5 per adult for tour places. Your donations will help pay for post-excavation conservation and lab analysis, for FCA’s programme of public engagement with schools and community groups, and to contribute to archaeology student welfare.
Book for guided tours of the excavation on Ticketsource.
We’re encouraging visitors to combine their tour of the dig with a visit to the beautiful and interesting Holy Trinity Church. It was the successor to the Anglo-Saxon monastery, and parts of the building date back to the 1140s. It has been a central part of Cookham life for almost a thousand years.
