The 2023 excavation on Paddock Field started in mid-July, and was open to visitors from 24th July. We worked 9-5, Monday to Saturday, finishing on Saturday 2nd September, when the treenches were backfilled.
Field School students gave site tours throughout every day, and Gabor Thomas and senior archaeologists gave guided tours of the excavation and finds.
Some 20 skeletons were excavated from the cemetery in Trench 2, and were lifted for analysis by specialists at the University of Reading’s Archaeology Department. At the northern edge of the site, we found what appears to be a leat – the water channel which powered a watermill. A well was partially excavated in Trench 1. It was lined with a wooden barrel, preserved below the water table. Its excavation will progress further in 2024.
