A photogrammetry picture of the inside of the well lining. The blue object is the pump keeping the well from re-filling.

The well was found in 2022 and fully dug in 2024. Its lining was preserved below the waterline due to the anaerobic conditions. It is constructed of a hollowed-out oak tree trunk. Dendrochronology (tree ring dating) has dated the tree’s felling to between 741 and 764AD. A more precise date wasn’t possible as insufficient timber was preserved. It is probable that the tree was selected specifically for the lining, so it is likely that it was used soon after felling. Dating of timber later thrown into the well suggest that it went out of use in the late 8th/early 9th century.
