Cookham Dig 2025 | End of This Year's Dig

Dear Liz,

The University of Reading Field School at Cookham Abbey has now finished for another year. Exciting things generally happen in the last week of a dig and this one was no exception:

Cookham Abbey Dig 2025 | End of Dig Round Up

Discovery | The Leat

In the last week of the dig, we succeeded in reaching the bottom of the leat,

Discovery | An Amazing Bone Comb

And found yet another, very beautiful, comb in the top of our second well.
We’ve had a successful range of community engagement activities...

Discovery | Pile from the Leat - Video

And we also managed, with a bit of a struggle, to remove one of the piles in the leat. Our post includes a video of its removal.
We hope you have enjoyed receiving these emails. The dig will be back next year but, in the meantime, we plan to keep posting on the discoveries made in both this and past years and on the community activities of the Friends of Cookham Abbey. We’ll send you emails from time to time alerting you to new posts.

Finally, we cannot but recommend this drone footage filmed by one of our volunteers, James Camplin. It’s a true reminder of the beautiful setting of Cookham and its Early Medieval Abbey.
Thank you...
The Friends of Cookham Abbey team.
